 this week we learned about Africa 

classic African house 

there are a not of different types of houses round, ovoid, square, or rectangular and made of stones, brick, mud, wood, or straw. there is also the circle and square house the circle is the classic version and the square came about the the 20th century. there houses weren't built like the houses we normally think of when we think of a house they were very open and housed not just the family but extended family and animals. 



furniture 

Stools are the most common type of seating in Africa and are normally low to the ground. they were normaly carved out of 1 pice of wood event though they were simple they were very durable. 

Dogon stools use carved people to represent ancestors and connect the earth and sky.

Art nouveau

This week we learned about Art Nouveau, which lasted from 1880 to 1920. Art nouveau means "new art," and it was called that because they were rejecting the old and they were using new materials. Art Nouveau was inspired by nature and was very detailed.  french art nouveau interior Breezeway of the Castel Béranger,  Gateway of the Castel Béranger stairs furniture examples  modern day examples  One step farther Aubrey Beardsley He was born in 1872 and died in 1898. He is known for his pen and ink drawings. He mixed Japanese and Art Nouveau together. At the time his art was very controversial, with his art often being dark and/or erotic.  He said, "I have one aim—the grotesque. If I am not grotesque, I am nothing." He co-founded the Yellow Book and also was their art editor and made the covers for the magazine.
