arts and craft


the arts and crafts movement went from 1868-1930. the arts and crafts was inspired by the medievial times they specifically looked at German tribes, Icelandic sagas, Celtic tales, and the story of King Arthur. 

the arts and crafts used a lot of wood materials that had exposed joints to go with them. William Morris was a key person when it came to the arts and crafts

he was born in 1857 he was a British designer he was a successful architect and wallpaper designer started his own practice in 1888 and became popular around 1895.. his designed homes that were simple and well built.

    Great Blog entry. I appreciated your summary and beautiful images to support your material. On your next Blog please label each image and explain the name of the place or furniture. Charles Vosey was a perfect choice to study further. The "One Step Further section should be about 2-3 paragraphs long and include 3-5 images of their work. Also, you need a reflection at the end.   japan In Japanese historic architecture the building types are Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, castles, palaces, governmental buildings, and homes of nobles. These historic buildings had a lot of variety in what they were made of, like stone, wood, and other things. Shokintei Pavilion IIt's a bit unusual how we access this building. If you wanted to visit, you would have to row across a lake in a small boat to reach it. It is made up of a lot of rooms that are about the size of a tatami mat. A lot of the walls are made with sliding screens, shoji panels of wood and paper, with some being able to be moved and some not. Art nouveau

This week we learned about Art Nouveau, which lasted from 1880 to 1920. Art nouveau means "new art," and it was called that because they were rejecting the old and they were using new materials. He is known for his pen and ink drawings. He mixed Japanese and Art Nouveau together. At the time his art was very controversial, with his art often being dark and/or erotic.  He said, "I have one aim—the grotesque. If I am not grotesque, I am nothing." He co-founded the Yellow Book and also was their art editor and made the covers for the magazine.  this week we learned about Africa  classic African house  there are a not of different types of houses round, ovoid, square, or rectangular and made of stones, brick, mud, wood, or straw. there is also the circle and square house the circle is the classic version and the square came about the the 20th century. there houses weren't built like the houses we normally think of when we think of a house they were very open and housed not just the family but extended family and animals.  furniture  Stools are the most common type of seating in Africa and are normally low to the ground. they were normaly carved out of 1 pice of wood event though they were simple they were very durable.  Dogon stools use carved people to represent ancestors and connect the earth and sky.
